Where to stay in South Tenerife

The Canary Islands are considered by many to be blessed with one of the best climates in the world.  Not too hot, not too cold!

In Tenerife, depending the time of the year, you can see snow, rain and sun and enjoy the water at the beach, all in the same day.

There is a stark contrast between the North of the island and the South.  The North, like Puerto de la Cruz receives a generous amount of rain and it helps create a lush vegetation that covers incredible trails.

The South, by contrast, receives very little rain, which makes it ideal to enjoy the sun almost every day of the year.  It is no wonder then that tourist of all ages from around the world visit this part of the island all year round!

Now, many people always want to know where to stay in South Tenerife.

Of course, this is a matter of personal choice and optics:

There are plenty of little and big towns in the South, and even more beaches to chose from.  The following is just a selection of some of these places, based on different interests:
  • El Médano: perfect for wind sports lovers! Beautiful sandy beaches next to a charming town.  It is frequented by surf, kite surf and other wind sports enthusiasts because of the almost constant strong winds.  While it may not be ideal for laying on the sun, you will have a lot of fun if you enjoy the above mentioned sports.
  • Palm-mar: cute little town with a rocky beach and some black sand.  Perfect for a relaxing holiday without too many people or stores.  May not be the best for going into the water as rocks are slippery and also make it difficult to lay down to enjoy the sun (although it is still possible) and the benefit is that there is considerably less people than in other areas.
Where to stay in South Tenerife?
  • Los Cristianos: a vibrant town full of shopping and cultural activities.  People of all ages come to this town because of its sandy beaches, shopping and entertainment.  Not to mention the proximity to the port and the easiness to travel to other islands by ferry.
  • Playa Las Vistas, Los Cristianos: my personal favourite to stay in South Tenerife! Nested between two active areas: Los Cristianos downtown and Golden Mile, it offers beautiful certified Blue Flag sandy beaches with crystal clear water.  No big ferries and ships like you will find in Los Cristianos beach (being the port), no rocky beaches or strong winds.  Ideal for families, couples, groups of friends and solo travelers who like to be close to everything yet not immersed in the action.
  • Las Americas: A very famous part of the island because of the constant parties! If you enjoy parties and dance clubs, this may be your place!
  • El Duque: gorgeous beaches and upscale shopping make this a perfect destination for families and couples of all ages.
So, where to stay in South Tenerife? It all depends again on personal choice and budget of course.  Remember that the closest to the water the less walking up and down hill you will have to do from the beach to your place.  Also, you may want to make sure there is an actual beach where you are planning to stay and not rocks or the Port.

All this said, South Tenerife is a beautiful destination that will welcome you with its fantastic climate and sunny skies.
